Here's a close-up view of the reverse side of the chocolate flower, rather than its face. Chocolate flower - it truly, amazingly, does smell just like chocolate - is native to the American Southwest down to central Mexico. Surprisingly, the petals are pure deep yellow on the front, but striped red on the reverse. They are held in a beautiful light green receptacle. The front of this receptacle is also highly ornamental after the petals fall off. Given the right conditions this wildflower (berlandiera lyrata) does well under cultivation. This one is in my Tucson, Arizona garden.
